"Fixin' to"

Meaning: About to do something Example: "I'm fixin' to head to the store." This is perhaps the most Texan phrase of all. You'll hear it dozens of times a day.

"Over yonder"

Meaning: Over there (within sight) Example: "The restaurant is over yonder, past the gas station."

"Down yonder"

Meaning: Far away, at least one town over Example: "My cousin lives down yonder in Austin."

"Bless your heart"

Meaning: Can be genuine sympathy OR a polite way of calling someone foolish Example: "He tried to BBQ in the rain. Bless his heart." ⚠️ Warning: Context is everything with this one.

"I reckon"

Meaning: I think so / I believe Example: "I reckon we'll get there by sundown."

"Not my first rodeo"

Meaning: I've done this before, I'm experienced Example: "Don't worry about me driving in Dallas traffic — it ain't my first rodeo."

Texas Food Vocabulary

  • Coke = Any soft drink (not just Coca-Cola). "What kind of Coke do you want?" "Dr Pepper."
  • Kolache = Czech pastry filled with sausage, cheese, or fruit. A Texas breakfast staple.
  • Brisket = The king of Texas BBQ. Low and slow, 12-16 hours smoked.
  • Queso = Melted cheese dip. Not the same as nacho cheese. Don't confuse them.
  • Sweet tea = The default beverage. If you want unsweetened, you have to specifically ask.
  • Whataburger = Fast food royalty. Open 24/7. The orange-and-white striped roof is a Texas landmark.

Colorful Texas Sayings

"That dog won't hunt." — That idea won't work.

"All hat and no cattle." — Someone who's all talk, no action.

"You can hang your hat on that." — You can count on it.

"Madder than a wet hen." — Extremely angry.

"Rode hard and put away wet." — Looking exhausted or worn out.

"Happy as a clam at high tide." — Very content.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." — Leave well enough alone.

Texas Driving Lingo

  • Feeder road / Frontage road / Access road = The road running alongside a highway (same thing, different names depending on which part of Texas you're in)
  • The Loop = Loop 12 or Loop 820 — major circular highways
  • Mixmaster = The complex highway interchange in downtown Dallas
  • Turnaround = U-turn lane on a divided highway

How to Sound Like a Local

  1. Always say "y'all" — never "you guys"
  2. Dr Pepper has no period (it's not "Dr. Pepper")
  3. It's "Tex-Mex," not "Mexican food" (they're different cuisines)
  4. The correct answer to "How are you?" is "Livin' the dream"
  5. Wave at other drivers on rural roads — it's expected
